Your 20s will be one of the most defining decades of your life. You’ve probably just graduated or are already working in your first job, and now you are off to experience the real world. This is perhaps the first time you’ll pay bills on your own and go to a doctor's appointment without your mom. Sometimes, there may be a lot going on in your life that it's hard to decide what to do next.
This phenomenon you are experiencing is called the quarter-life crisis. You’re not alone: a study shows that 75% of 25- to 33-year-olds have experienced a quarter-life crisis at some point. But it’s not all hopeless. Through proper action and planning, you can break through the inertia of life and keep moving again. Here are 8 tips on how to get out of a rut in your 20s
1. Take stock of your life
Before starting your wellness journey, the most important thing you should do is take stock of your current situation in life. Inspect your health, financial position, and personal relationships to see where there is an imbalance in your life. If you feel that one aspect of your life dominates the other elements, you should consider making some adjustments to change your situation.
2. Recalibrate your goals
With so many things that you need to set up for yourself in your 20s, it may get overwhelming to think about them and eventually lead to analysis paralysis. Now that you’ve taken stock of your life, you should also recalibrate your goals to fit your current situation better.
A good practice to do is avoid making ambiguous goals (e.g., “I want to be healthy”) and create measurable goals (e.g., “I want to lose 10 kilos in 3 months”) instead.
3. Prioritize your well-being first
While recalibrating your goals will often result in a sudden burst of energy and motivation, it may take a toll on your physical and mental health. You are your greatest asset, so it only follows that you prioritize your health before anything else.
Bettering yourself is an incentive in itself, but if you need more motivation to keep going, BPI-AIA’s Wellness Series offers rewards when you achieve your fitness goals.
4. Reach out to your circle of friends
Reaching out to your close friends will help you put things in the right perspective. You’re probably in the same age group, so they’re most likely going through the same experience as you are now. Maintaining this support structure will help you cope with the uncertainties in life and help you deal with your emotions.
5. Improve your financial literacy
Most of the time, life feels like a treadmill. You get up, go to work, sleep, and repeat the next day until you retire. You may feel stuck at your station in life, especially if you do not have the option to move on to more exciting things.
The best way to get you out of this rut is to actively improve your financial literacy. By learning how to manage your finances, you can make a comfortable cushion for yourself that you can use to switch careers or start that business that you like.

6. Learn how to budget
It can get constricting to make a lifestyle change if your financial position does not allow it. Creating a monthly budget (and sticking to it!) is the best way to start trudging your own course and avoid getting swept up by the current of life.
Having a little extra money will not only help you with building your emergency fund, but it will also help you afford a life insurance policy of your own.

7. Get an insurance policy
Nothing beats knowing that you can recover and bounce back from unfortunate events. An insurance policy will protect you from financial losses when your assets are harmed.
The most common insurance policies are for life and health insurance. However, you can also insure your car, home, or business to help you recover from accidents. Being insured will allow you to take more risks and pursue your dreams without the fear of being financially crippled if things go wrong.
8. Look for investment opportunities
Saving up and investing for your future is a great way to shake off your current feeling of being stuck in life. However, it would be best to closely study what investment vehicles will align with your needs and goals.
Passively holding stocks and bonds for the long term is a good investment to put your money to work while you’re at your day job. REITs (real estate investment trusts) have also recently launched in the Philippines, which gives Filipino investors an affordable way to diversify their investment portfolios to the real estate market.
