An honest evaluation of your achievements and challenges lets you recognize how certain conditions or situations affect your progress. From there, you can modify your strategy to focus more on what helps you advance in your efforts and less on those that are holding you back.

    • Timeline: Developing and following a timeline allows you to stay organized. A schedule helps you break down large chunks of tasks into more manageable levels, so you don’t put undue pressure on yourself to produce or see results immediately. Setting a deadline is also necessary to remind you of the importance of using your time wisely to let your goals come to fruition.

    • Accountability: Accountability is about taking responsibility for your actions. By holding yourself accountable, you don’t wait for your goal to take care of itself, but instead, you set out to do something about it using your knowledge, judgment, experiences, skills, and relevant resources.

    Tips to Develop Sustainable Habits and Goals

    1. Set SMART goals

    This is one of the best practices you can adopt as you try to learn how to create goals. The SMART goals approach requires that you aim for something specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound.

    With this set of criteria, you can stay on top of your goals and habits because you’ve laid out everything properly: what you want to achieve, what steps will help you get there, how you will track your progress, and how much time you need to invest.

    2. Start small

    Sleeping early to recharge your body for work the next day, eating nutritious foods and taking supplements, taking a leisurely walk after meals—these are just some habits that can be a good training ground to help you develop self-discipline and prevent you from wandering off into negative behaviors or attitudes.

    5. Be committed

    Commitment is promising yourself to devote attention, time, and energy to your ideals.

    For instance, after getting off from work, you go to your bedroom next because that’s where you keep your workout clothes. You also know that it’s the time of day when work has to take a backseat so that you can care for your body through exercise, meditation, or other worthy activities.

    6. Celebrate small wins

    Whenever you accomplish something, no matter how small, give yourself credit for it. You deserve it for working hard to get past your difficulties or limitations, so try not to downplay it. That will help in making you feel good about yourself and inspire you even more.

    7. Find role models among family and friends

    The people you spend time and interact with can have an impact on your behavior, so best to have role models you can learn from.

    Study how they approach problems and ask them for advice, support, or guidance, as it pays to have other perspectives—especially from people who have more experience or authority—on how to create habits that will make your goals more attainable.
