For most people, 29-year-old Christine appears to have everything: she has a loving partner, a supportive family, a stable job with decent pay, and constant weekend adventures—just enough to keep life interesting.
To lessen the daily stresses of her nine-to-five job though, food became her escape. Every weekend, she’d go out with friends and family to try a new restaurant or experience a food park. Her social media feed was every foodie’s dream. On holidays and family gatherings, she expressed her joy through cooking.
“I didn’t care about the calories,” she said. “Back then, I just thought that anything low fat or sugar-free was also taste-free. And taste is definitely my priority when I eat and cook. I love cooking—and eating—pasta, especially cream-based ones.” This usually meant never shying away from butter, cream, and cheese.
Christine continued this lifestyle until one day, she had a health scare and was rushed to the hospital. While her doctor found nothing too serious at the time, she was advised to lose weight and start leading a healthier lifestyle if she wanted to stay healthy in the long run.
“It was definitely more than just bad news for me,” Christine said. “Giving up desserts and soda and all those yummy stuff was the hardest part, because for me it was also the best part about food.”
Despite her cravings, Christine knew she needed to make the right decision for her future and her family’s. “My parents were only a couple of years away from retirement and I was also contributing to my siblings’ tuition. Of course, I also wanted to have a family of my own in the future, so I knew I had to make the right choice,” she explained.
“I knew I had to take care of myself, so I could take care of my future.”
According to Christine, the first few weeks of her new lifestyle involved some struggles: She started prepping her own lunches to bring to work so she could lessen the amount of times she would eat out. She started taking walks on her way to work and back whenever she could. She also took the stairs instead of the elevator, and most weekends were no longer spent binge eating.
“It took quite a lot of time and even more effort to keep the discipline,” Christine pointed out. “But the more I thought about the payoff [of taking care of myself], I got more motivated. Staying active was more doable, eating healthier became more bearable. I even took a cooking lesson so I could make better, healthier food—not just for me, but for my family, too.”
Today, not only has Christine achieved her goal weight, but she has also encouraged her mom and some friends to lead a healthier life. Christine shared that she feels more fulfilled today than she did two years ago.
“I just wanted to break the notion that living a healthier lifestyle means having to go vegan or being a gym rat,” she said. “For me, it’s more about making the right choices for you, for your body, and more importantly, for your future. I saw the need to secure my present, so that I can look forward to a better life.”
For Christine, making the right decisions today meant a brighter and more fruitful future. So aside from improving her food choices, she also signed up for an insurance policy that gave her—and her family—a lifetime of ease, security, and freedom: BPI AIA's Life Ready Plus powered by AIA Vitality.
“I wanted to make sure I didn’t have to worry about my future, so I figured that while I’m still capable of working and earning, I should put my money to good use,” she explained.
