It is always a treat to explore the world. But, when the destinations you visit are places where wellness is part of the culture, it becomes extra special. The Hawaiians have the word “holoholo” that captures the spirit of living in the islands. Literally translated, it means going outside for a walk or experiencing the water. But, it has taken on a deeper cultural meaning. It expresses the trait of experiencing the outdoors for pleasure. There’s no need to have a goal, other than be in the moment and have fun.
The benefits occur in two ways. First, outdoor activities usually involve movement, which have a physical benefit. Walking, biking, or swimming are cardiovascular activities that help the body become stronger and more fit. Also, holoholo emphasizes taking the time to enjoy what you're doing. In a study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being, Ed Diener found that lessening stress and increasing positivity has positive effects on the health.
