President and Chief Executive Officer
To our valued stakeholders,
We entered 2020 on a high note right after the celebration of our 10th year anniversary and the completion of our home office renovation, hopeful for what the year had to offer. But what greeted us was something truly unexpected.
The first quarter saw the confirmation of the first COVID-19 case in the Philippines at the end of January and by mid-March, a third of the country was swiftly placed under community quarantine. Movement became very limited for many.
To put the health of our people first, we shifted our head office teams to work from home. For our salespeople whose branches of assignment were closed, they began working from home, while those who could still report to branches, did so.
As we witnessed the spread of the virus throughout the country, a realization came to many: the need for life insurance. A heightened awareness for its need became apparent, driving citizens to reach out to the insurance companies anew, seeking to protect themselves and their families. Although some are still hesitant to spend large amounts on insurance coverage, more and more Filipinos are starting to see that protection truly is a necessity.
In response to the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, extended grace periods and alternate ways to pay were put into place, helping our clients who may have been experiencing cashflow or finance troubles brought upon by the pandemic.
By September, we launched our FREE COVID-19 life insurance coverage program with a target to cover one million Filipinos. Amid all the uncertainty and anxiety that came with the pandemic, we had to keep in mind that helping our clients take care of their loved ones and protect what mattered most to them was our priority. As of March 2021, we have paid out Php3,000,000 in claims.
With this rise in demand and interest, we were fortunate enough to be one of the few companies that, instead of letting people go, had to take more employees in – 881 throughout 2020 alone. We needed to empower our salespeople faster than ever before.
As our sales force grew, our various digital enhancement projects had to keep up. Many that were scheduled for a later time in 2020, or even beyond the year, had to be executed right away.
Starting our digital transformation journey years ahead prepared us for the changes that were quickly put in place: our Leads Management System (LMS) was pushed to its limits and came through; an eKYC (e-Know Your Customer) process was introduced; our digital payment channels were enhanced for our customers’ convenience; Bessie, our chatbot available on Facebook Messenger and Viber, was also launched to add another way for us to be there for our customers 24/7; our Coffee Closing Project was implemented to help clients get insured in just three steps and within 20 minutes; and of course, Fusion, AIA Philam Group’s AI-powered and award-winning digital underwriting platform.
2020 also saw the launch of MedLife Protect Plus, a life insurance product that is the first of its kind, combining the protection of life insurance, health insurance, and investment. Created in partnership with leading healthcare administration firm, AVEGA, MedLife Protect Plus quickly garnered the attention of those who did not have any existing health insurance or simply wanted to upgrade their coverage. It was another milestone product that allowed us to continue with our mission of providing affordable and accessible life insurance for all.
All these endeavors throughout the year provided us the honor of being awarded yet again by World Finance as the Best Life Insurance Company in the Philippines. We are very proud to have the distinction of being acknowledged as an industry leader for five years in a row.
We welcome 2021 with a renewed hope, looking forward to not only our recovery, but the country’s as well. Together with all the stakeholders of BPI AIA, we look forward to ‘owning the future’ in this brave new world.
