We tend to think of our eating habits as something we figure out once and then carry with us for life. But as we age, our bodies – and their nutritional needs – don’t stay the same. The meals and routines that kept you energized in your twenties may no longer provide what your body requires in your forties, fifties, and beyond. 

No matter your age or stage of life, these essential nutrition guidelines can help you make more informed choices and support better health for years to come. 

WHEN YOU’RE YOUNGER (20S–35) 
You’re in your peak demand years, whether for career, family, and everything in between. Your metabolism is relatively efficient, but it’s starting to slow. These are the decades where habits either get locked in or get harder to form. The ones you build are the ones your body will rely on later.  

• Load up on protein   
  Muscle doesn’t build itself. Get enough of eggs, fish, chicken and tofu at most of the meals you take, not just when you remember. 

• Watch your iron intake  
  Busy schedules and skipped meals make iron deficiency more common than most people expect, especially among women. Leafy greens, red meat, and fortified foods are your friends here. 

• Remember your omega-3 fatty acids  
  Food rich in omega-3 support both heart and brain health and mitigate mood disorders, three things that deserve more attention at this stage. Sources include walnuts, flaxseed and fatty fish like bangus, salmon, and sardines.  
  

• Don’t fear carbs

WHEN YOU GET OLDER (40S–60S)

• Make calcium and vitamin D non-negotiable 
  Bone density starts declining earlier than most people realize. Dairy, leafy greens, and a little safe sun exposure go a long way toward keeping things strong. 

• Add more fiber to every meal   
  Digestion slows down as you age, and fiber helps keep things moving. It’s also one of the best things you can do for your heart. Vegetables, fruits, oats, and legumes all count. 

• Don’t forget your vitamin B12  
  Absorption decreases with age, so ensure you eat plenty of fish, eggs, and fortified cereals. 

• Cut back on sodium and sugar 
  Blood pressure and sugar spikes become more relevant concerns in your 40s and beyond, and processed food is the single biggest hidden source in most diets. You don’t have to go bland. Just be more mindful of your foot choices and aim for balance at all times. 

• Consider eating smaller meals more often  
  Large meals can feel heavier as digestion slows. Spreading your intake across the day is easier on your system and often keeps your energy more stable too. 

• Hydrate  
  Your natural sense of thirst diminishes with age, so make a conscious effort to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
